Moscow – The World Health Organization (WHO) will soon address the issue of the possible use of certificates or “vaccination passports” in international travel, said Oleg Benesh, an expert from the immunology division of the institution’s European office.
According to the specialist in a telematic press conference for Russian media, this issue is “on the agenda of the International Committee on Medical and Health Standards” and expressed his hope that it will be discussed soon.
“With the release of effective and safe vaccines against the coronavirus, the WHO is studying the issues surrounding the vaccination of international travelers. We would like to remind you that the use of an international certificate is a matter regulated by medical and hygiene regulations “, he indicated.
The expert confirmed that the international organization is analyzing the scientific, normative and ethical aspects of this initiative.
Benesh indicated that the WHO is currently working in three main directions: the recommendation of vaccines to those who travel, the approval by countries of restrictions or vaccination requirements for travelers, as well as the exchange of information between countries on vaccination processes.
Russia was one of the countries to propose the introduction of vaccination or immunity passports, for which the upcoming publication of a digital document on the portal for state services was announced, an initiative similar to Israel’s, which will issue ‘green passports’. to vaccinees, to facilitate their mobility.
Last December, the President of the Russian Senate, Valentina Matvienko, attacked this practice, which she described as an “anti-utopia” that would promote discrimination between citizens.
However, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, not only supported the issue of vaccination passports, but also asked the government on April 4 to investigate the possibility that this vaccination document has international validity.
