Police confirm that the murderer of the three officers was the man executed in Santurce

Puerto Rico’s designated police commissioner Antonio López Figueroa confirmed this afternoon that the man was found dead in Santurce in the early hours of Tuesday, identified as David Emanuel Rivera Batiz, is the murderer of the state police officer Luis Marrero Díaz, as well as the municipal police officers Luis Salamán Conde and Eliezer Hernández Cartagena.

Rivera Batiz, 25, a resident of Ponce, was murdered and his body was found along with a sign that read: “I am responsible for the murder of the guards. Here it is”.

The Colonel confirmed that Rivera Batiz belonged to the criminal organization known as “the FARC” and was one of those involved in the murder of Isadora Nieves, known as Pinky Curvy. It indicated that the person had a criminal record for stolen vehicles, the gun law, and that he was a suspect in several murders in the Ponce area.

Regarding the possibility that Rivera Batiz had cooperated in the case of the agents, López Figueroa said that this angle “is under investigation and we are unable to provide any information”.

At a press conference, Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Trinidad presented several images recovered from cameras located near the incident that helped identify Rivera Batiz, including a tattoo with the italicized name ‘Sophia’ on his arm and another tattoo on his left leg.

He claimed the images were evaluated by an expert to confirm that the young man executed was in fact responsible for the murder.

The appointed Commissioner pointed out that the investigation is still ongoing and requested the cooperation of the public in finding the whereabouts of Carlos Cotto, known as “Wassa”, who is a suspect in several murders and other criminal cases. The name “Wassa” initially appeared as one of the suspects in the agents’ case.

He also indicated that the investigation is continuing into the person responsible for Rivera Batiz’s death. “Every death is important, that young man is someone’s son,” he said.

The police had stayed at the Luis Llorens Torres residence until this afternoon, where the person who shot and run over the police officers took refuge. The assistant investigative commissioner Rolando Trinidad said yesterday that they had multiple relationships of trust about different people and that he did not rule out cooperation from the killer.

The director of the Institute of Forensic Science (ICF), María Conte Miller, has already provided the autopsy reports of the three police officers, as well as the results of Rivera Batiz’s autopsy.

Conte Miller also indicated that they are testing different vehicles to gather evidence that may contain genetic material. An investigation of the ballistics collected on the spot, which will serve to see in detail which weapons were used in the crime, has also yet to be completed.
