There were over 2 billion tweets about gaming in 2020, most of them for Animal Crossing

We’re not saying it’s because we didn’t have anything better to do, but apparently we’ll all tweet 75% more about video games in 2020 than in 2019. Huh! Weird!

With that big chunk of tweets comes an interesting insight into what we’re actually saying with those posts: it seems Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the biggest topic, before mobile games Fate / Grand Order and Disney: Twisted-Wonderland, both hugely popular in Japan.

Last December’s Game Awards were the most tweeted about gaming event, in which New Horizons won Best Family Game, and we saw Sephiroth being announced as the latest Smash Bros. character.

Whether we’re tweeting about them, sharing screenshots, or just patiently waiting for news, the most followed game topics are included Fortnite, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing again. The topics “PlayStation” and “Xbox” both also made the top ten, but “Nintendo” and “Switch” didn’t – possibly because we can’t all bear the grief that new direct rumors are debunked. Sigh.

In the meantime it seems Among us has brought tremendous recognition to its most famous players, as a musician and renowned deep voice oats @RTLnews cracks the top ten “Most Tweeted About Gaming Personalities” after its streams featuring US representatives, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.

We know we’ve been guilty of using Twitter to find adorable Animal Crossing designs for our islands, but how have you used social media to talk about gaming? Let us know in the comments.
