But what can Colombians do to achieve these goals and not die trying? Arbeláez makes the following recommendations:

  • Write the commitments where we can easily keep them. That is, on the mobile phone or on a calendar that we view permanently.
  • Review each of the commitments thoroughly to determine if they are achievable. It is essential to determine that compliance is up to you and not others or external circumstances.
  • Include our commitments in what we want to see of ourselves next year. For example: I want to take better care of my health next year. So there must be commitments aimed at working towards a better diet or maintaining physical activity.
  • Identify the specific activities to fulfill each commitment. What happens to us year after year is that we make general commitments without clear activities to achieve them.
  • Define a time for each activity related to each of the commitments entered into. For example, “I go for a jog every day from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM.”
  • Write down the positive consequences or benefits that would be achieved by fulfilling each of the goals.

  • Make up to 5 global commitments as sometimes many goals can become unattainable goals.
  • Ideally, there are obligations in all areas of life: personal, family, couple, social, academic, work, etc. Sometimes we focus on just one area and this can be unbalanced for the functioning of our lives.
  • Determine your own incentives for meeting each of the obligations. For example, if I can finish my finance course, I go to my favorite restaurant and order the dish I like best.
  • Involve other people in the agreements made. The encouragement and recognition of those around us can provide additional motivation.

“When people don’t fulfill their goals, it’s normal to feel frustrated. The meaning of life is affected when something is desired with great desire and it is not achieved, knowing that it depended exclusively and exclusively on ourselves, ”adds Arbeláez.
