The mayor says the number of deaths in Los Angeles County Covid-19 in a day is equal to the number of deaths in the city in a year

“There were 259 deaths yesterday, one more than all LA City murders in 2019 combined,” he said. “One day equals a year of murders.”

The city of Los Angeles has nearly 4 million inhabitants, while the province has about 10 million inhabitants.

“We are not, and never will, as usual, get used to these numbers. I will never accept them as something we just have to live with,” the mayor added. Because each one of these things means everything to somebody that’s here today.

Every 8 minutes, someone in Los Angeles County dies from Covid-19

“We all need to keep doing more,” he said.

The region has been battling a relentless spate of Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations for weeks that has translated into rising deaths.
Los Angeles County officials are now saying one person dies from Covid-19 every eight minutes.
“People who otherwise lived healthy, productive lives are now dying from a chance encounter with the Covid-19 virus,” health officials said earlier this week. “This doesn’t end until we all make the right decisions to protect each other.”
More than 8,000 people are hospitalized with the virus in Los Angeles County, 20% of whom are in intensive care units.
The `` human disaster '' unfolding in LA will get worse, experts say
Since Jan. 3, the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients has increased by more than 550, health officials said Thursday.

And infections are rampant – they are accelerating at an “alarming” rate, they added.

“Everyone in LA County, businesses and residents, must follow the rules if there is any chance we can get out of this wave by the end of the month,” Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles’ director of health, said in a statement.

“I implore everyone to stay at home as much as possible. Shopping for anything but food and medicine and mingling with others are activities we should all stop in the coming weeks as it increases risk,” Ferrer added. “There are just too many people spreading the virus, too many sick and hospitalized and every person who dies is one too many.”
