HOUSTON – Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee has introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. This comes a day after a pro-Trump riot in the Capitol on Wednesday.
Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and the Budget, said in a statement, “Our constitution is written as a guide to governing our democracy and to protect it from authoritarian and tyrannical scrutiny. It also serves as a tool to protect our nation from both foreign and domestic enemies who wish to harm our Republic. At this point in our history, our constitutional forefathers are crying out for us to use the tools provided in this timeless document. Yesterday we saw domestic enemies incite violence and break into people’s homes with the intent to harm. Enough is enough! The president has completely lost his moral authority and is unfit as commander-in-chief. His actions to incite violence against his own government and against the entire Congress warrant his removal from office. And if government officials refuse to invoke the 25th Amendment, I will proceed with articles of impeachment to remove him from office for the following reasons: “
“Donald John Trump has made an active and constant effort to undermine the essential institutions and foundations of a democratic system of government in the United States, has been guilty of a long series of abuses and usurpations, has consistently shared the same goal, has a plan to to make themselves authoritarian. ruler who is not responsible for and independent of the people of the United States by:
- Seek and welcome the assistance of a hostile foreign power to assist him in securing the 2016 election as President of the United States.
- Refusing to recognize Russian interference in the internal affairs of the United States, and subsequently opposes the responses of Congress and the executive branch to protect the national security and interests of the United States from future Russian interference and aggression.
- Publicly express his interest and willingness to accept the assistance of foreign powers in his bid for re-election as President of the United States.
- Continually refuse to acknowledge to the American people that he would accept and be bound by the verdict of the 2020 presidential election, instead claiming that any outcome in which he was not declared a winner was fraudulent, falsified, and illegal.
- Take active steps to hinder and undermine the ability of U.S. citizens to exercise their disapproval of his continued existence in office by exercising their rights as voters, including misuse of the United States Postal Service to ensure the timely delivery of mail -in ballots.
- Filing frivolous lawsuits to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election, falsely involving widespread voting fraud, but providing no evidence to support his trumped-up allegations.
- Urging and inciting his supporters to falsely believe that the 2020 presidential election victory was stolen from him and that the constitutionally required joint meeting of Congress for the counting of voters’ votes and the announcement of the result by the President of the senate was illegal and intended to complete the theft of his victory.
- Take no action to protect and defend federal officers and personnel, property, buildings and institutions on January 6, 2021 in the U.S. Capitol under siege by supporters of Donald John Trump, resulting in extensive damage to United States property and death of at least four people.
As the resolution points out and makes clear, a person ‘whose character is thus characterized by any act that can define a tyrant is unfit to be the ruler of a free people’ and justifies impeachment and removal as President of the United States . “
