BOSTON (CBS) – According to a new study by a moving company, more people packed up and left Massachusetts last year than those who moved in. The Bay State is No. 8 on United Van Lines’ Most Moved From States In 2020 list.
According to the study, about 57% of the removals in Massachusetts were for the company.
New Jersey topped the list, followed by New York, Illinois, Connecticut and California.
“In the northeast region, more residents continue to move out than move in, with more than 60% of all moves within the northeastern US being outgoing moves,” United Van Lines said.
The coronavirus pandemic played a role in many people’s decision to move, according to the study, and the Northeast was hit particularly hard in early 2020.
The study found that the Worcester-Fitchburg-Leominster region was among the top 20 metropolitan areas with outbound migration across the country – 64% of all moves there were outbound.
According to estimates from the early 2020 census, most of New England is seeing population decline, but New Hampshire is experiencing modest gains.
