Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili labeled Trump as “the main culprit” in the murder of Soleimani, which he called a “terrorist crime,” the semi-official Mehr News Agency reported. according to NPR. Other US officials included in the request are US military commanders and officials in the region and at the Pentagon.
The request marked the second time Iran has asked for help in the arrest of the president.
The request to issue a ‘Red Notice’ for 48 people involved in the assassination of Martyr Soleimani, including the US President, as well as Pentagon commanders and officers and forces in the region, were handed to Interpol, Esmaili said during a briefing.
Interpol’s red communications call on law enforcement agencies around the world to help locate and arrest fugitives who are being prosecuted or wanted for jail terms.
But the Interpol General Secretariat told NPR that the police association’s constitution states, “It is strictly prohibited for the organization to engage in any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial nature.”
Trump and other government officials said the US was targeted by Soleimani in a January 2020 strike that ultimately killed the general. The president had said Soleimani is “plotting threatening and sinister attacks” against the US.
A United Nations investigator later concluded that the US strike was “illegal and arbitrary under international law.”
Iran has pledged retaliation for the general’s assassination, and days later the country launched a missile attack on an Iraqi air base that housed US troops, leading to the traumatic brain injuries of more than 100 US military personnel. The country first filed for Trump’s arrest in June.
On the one-year anniversary of Soleimani’s death, Iran’s judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi, said “Trump will have to repay whatever his position,” NPR reported, citing the conservative Iranian newspaper Kayhan.
“Whether he heads the US administration or not, Trump must be retaliated for the atrocities he committed,” he said.
