Governor Pedro Pierluisi, and the secretary of the department Job and Human Resources, Carlos J. Rivera Santiago, announced the signing of a new agreement between the Ministry of Job Federal and the island.
This is the new Blended Unemployment Compensation Program (MEUC, for its acronym in English) that will provide additional compensation of $ 100 per week to citizens who receive unemployment benefits because they are employed, but in turn generate income that increases at least $ 5,000 in job self-employed during tax year 2019. These persons are the ones who are not eligible to receive PUA as they qualify for unemployment.
“I reiterate that my government will take advantage of all available and necessary resources to provide Puerto Rican families with economic relief from the loss of income from the effects of Covid-19. Part of our agenda is to identify and implement all that aid that improves the financial situation of our families and in turn boosts the island’s economy, ”said Governor Pierluisi in written statements.
For his part, the secretary of the department Job and Human Resources, Carlos J. Rivera Santiago explained that this program is primarily aimed at those citizens, who have a main job and the employer pays unemployment insurance, in turn had a second job independently and reported an income equal to $ 5,000 or more during taxable year 2019.
“We determined that approximately 60,000 people could qualify for the requirements, representing an economic impact of approximately $ 65 million. I thank the governor for the dedication with which I sign such an important initiative, ”said the head of the Job.
Requirements and instructions for participating in the program will be published in the coming weeks.
