It’s 2021 and Adobe no longer supports the Flash Player, so it’s time you uninstall it from your Mac. Here’s how to remove the relic from an older era of Internet browsing.
Flash was an important element of early web browsing and was used to control various animations, forms and other interactive elements on a website for a user. It was embraced because it offered more options to web developers and media creators than HTML, animated GIFs, and other basic technologies of the time.
However, as browsers improved and started to denounce open standards such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly, Flash was left out as the dominant way to provide interactivity. The increased use of the Flash Player installer for malware purposes has also likely accelerated its demise.
Flash’s death knell
Adobe announced in 2017 that it would discontinue development and distribution of Flash Player by the end of 2020 and encourage the adoption of other open formats for content that uses Flash. At the time, Adobe cited a partnership with Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla as the driving force behind the decision to discontinue the technology.
Since that announcement, Adobe has continued to support Flash with security patches and other updates, with the actual EOL date set to December 31, 2020. Beginning January 1, 2021, Adobe would discontinue support for Flash Player itself, followed by setting the software to use Flash. to block. no content at all from 12 January.
For end users, this largely means that Adobe no longer plans to release Flash Player updates or security patches. Since Flash can potentially pose a security risk, especially in the absence of further updates, Adobe actively advises users to remove the Flash Player from their computers.
Adobe has even taken the step of removing download pages for Flash Player from its website, to prevent nosy individuals from being tempted to install it for themselves in the last days of their lives.
Major browser vendors also prevent Flash Player from running from the EOL date. For Mac browsers, Safari turned off support for Adobe Flash in early 2020, after previously asking users to explicitly enable it, while Firefox version 84.0 is the latest to support Flash, and the same removal of support is on the way for Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
For iPhone and iPad users, Flash has never been a problem as iOS and iPadOS devices have never supported the technology.
Flash is not completely disabled, however, as Adobe has provided support options for corporate customers who require Flash Player for internal company systems. For the web in general, however, Flash is essentially dead.
Remove Flash
While web browsers remove support and it will seemingly inert, there is still some work you need to do to get rid of the last remnants of it from your Mac. The Flash Player is a separate application that must be removed before you can seriously consider that your Mac is Flash-free.
