LAGRANGE, Ind. (AP) – Peace, Love – and LaGrange.
LaGrange County, Indiana, repealed a 1971 law intended to block large gatherings such as the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival in New York State.
“I called it our anti-hippie ordinance,” said district commissioner Dennis Kratz with a smile.
The ordinance arranged for large gatherings lasting more than 12 hours and involving more than 500 people, The News Sun reported..
The law was recently repealed as part of an effort to repeal regulations that have no practical use but have been on the books for 100 years, especially certain traffic restrictions. District attorney Kurt Bachman’s investigation took three years.
“There were a lot of things in that process that led us to go, ‘What?’ … It’s been an amazing learning process, ”said Bachman, whose goal was to move provincial laws to an electronic, searchable record.
The county is located in northern Indiana, along the Michigan border.
