4-year-old died in a car accident on US 23 in Livingston County

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) – A 4-year-old North Carolina girl was killed in a car accident on Friday while traveling with her family.

On Friday, Jan. 1, around 11 p.m., deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to US 23 northbound south of Highland Road on the report of a single vehicle accident with possible injury.

A preliminary investigation found that a 36-year-old father from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was driving a Ford Expedition north in 2006 when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and hit several trees. The man’s 33-year-old wife, 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, deputies say.

During the crash, the driver’s 4-year-old daughter was thrown from the vehicle and died of her injuries on the spot. Police say the other occupants in the vehicle were freed by Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority personnel and taken to University of Michigan Hospital for injury treatment.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

This incident is still under investigation.
