- As the coronavirus continues to increase in the US, it is important for people planning to test along with family and friends.
- COVID-19 home testing kits are becoming commonplace and can even be covered by standard health insurance policies.
- Coronavirus test kits currently require a nasal swab, but Bill Gates believes less invasive options will become available in 2021.
Getting a COVID-19 test has never been easier, which is great news considering the coronavirus pandemic today is worse than ever. One of the reasons the coronavirus is on the rise is that people who have the virus and are relatively asymptomatic can unwittingly spread it to anyone they come into contact with. In light of that, and with the Christmas holidays just around the corner, many health experts fear that January could be the worst month in the entire pandemic.
Simply put, if you’ve been hanging out with people outside of your pod, or if you’re planning on, it’s smart to get tested whether you’ve had symptoms or not. The good news is that at home COVID tests are many and relatively easy to use.

An option for at-home COVID testing comes from LabCorp. The company has a home collection kit that includes a nasal swab. All you need to do is return the cotton swab to the company and they will let you know if it is positive for COVID-19. The company notes that the average waiting time for results is approximately 1-2 days after the sample is returned. It’s also worth noting that LabCorp operates 7 days a week
What makes LabCorp’s testing option so attractive is that you can take advantage of your health insurance when placing your order.
The site notes:
Please note that prepayment is not required to obtain a kit. Federal law that went into effect in March 2020 requires extensive private health insurance plans to cover this test and provides reimbursement funds to providers for COVID-19 testing for uninsured patients. If you choose to pay out of pocket, you choose not to charge a fee through this mechanism.
When placing an order, LabCorp will note your insurance information to streamline the entire process.
If you don’t have insurance, or if your carrier doesn’t cover it, LabCorp’s test kit costs $ 119, which is quite pricey. But don’t worry, there are other home test kit options available. As we discussed earlier this month, Walmart and Sam’s Club are now also selling coronavirus testing kits that cost as little as $ 99, depending on the type of shipping option you choose. In addition, these kits include a tele-health call in cases where a person does indeed test positive for COVID-19.
Walmart’s COVID-19 test kit can be purchased here, while Sam’s Club’s coronavirus test kit can be found here.
