Nine nuns die of COVID-19 at the New York State convent

Nine nuns in a convent in upstate New York have died of causes related to COVID-19 in just over a month.

The nuns lived in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Latham, according to the Albany Times Union.

“Four of the deaths related to the congregation had been reported by hospitals earlier this month,” Elizabeth Whalen, Albany County Health Commissioner, said in a statement to the newspaper. “The other five were not reported to the Albany County Department of Health by the facility.”

According to the website, the monastery is home to about 140 nuns.

On Dec. 11, St. Joseph of Carondelet’s sisters said 22 of the sisters had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a memo obtained by NBC subsidiary WNYT.

In December, eight nuns in a Wisconsin convent died the same week from COVID-19 complications; four of them die on the same day.
