DETROIT – The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 488,144 since Wednesday, including 12,333 deaths, state officials report.

Wednesday’s update includes 4,222 new cases and 51 additional deaths. The next data update is expected on January 2, 2021.

New COVID-19 cases are slowing, but death rates remain high in Michigan. Testing has slowed during the holidays, with more than 35,000 diagnostic tests reported per day, with the positive rate dropping to nearly 8% over the past week. Hospital admissions have decreased slowly, but remain relatively high, even in intensive care and on artificial respiration.

Michigan’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 2,602 Wednesday, nearly its lowest in a few weeks. The death average over seven days was 74. The state death rate is 2.5%. The state is also reporting “active cases,” which stood at 157,500 on Wednesday. More than 318,000 have been restored in Michigan.

More than 6.5 million people have been recovered in the US, with more than 20 million reports nationwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 340,000 have died in the US.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 82.5 million people have been infected worldwide and more than 1.8 million have died. The actual numbers are certainly much higher, due to limited testing, different ways nations count the dead, and deliberate under-reporting by some governments.

The US added a second COVID-19 vaccine to its arsenal on Friday, December 19, stepping up efforts to combat an outbreak so dire that the country regularly records more than 3,000 deaths a day.

The much-needed doses will arrive Monday after the Food and Drug Administration clears an emergency rollout of the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the state is reviewing its COVID-19 order to resume in-person high school classes, reopen certain indoor entertainment venues, and allow contactless outdoor sports and fitness classes.

The state is currently under a “pause” that imposed tougher COVID-19 regulations at restaurants, schools and more, but that order was due to expire on Sunday (the 20th of December).

Now the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has issued a revised version of the order, which will be effective until January 15.

A new tool created by Michigan Health Officers can calculate the likelihood of a person getting COVID-19 and how serious the infection could be based on their life situation and personal behavior.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched “CV19 CheckUp” – a free, anonymous tool that evaluates a person’s risks associated with COVID-19.

“This tool, which we will make available to all Michiganders, will help individuals understand their risk based on their life situation and personal behavior, and offers recommendations to reduce those risks while connecting people to services as needed,” said Dr. Alexis Travis, Senior Assistant Director of the Aging & Adult Services Agency.

Travis said the tool can be used by all Michigan residents, but it is specifically designed to help adults 60 and older. It is anonymous and does not require a name, email address or identification of any type.

The tool used artificial intelligence to analyze each person through an online questionnaire. It is designed for those who are considered to be at high risk.

The tool’s algorithms are driven by science and medicine, using data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation.
