Georgia Republican Senator David Perdue will be quarantined after being exposed to someone infected with Covid-19, removing him from the campaign trail just days before a hotly contested second election to keep his seat.

The senator was reported on Thursday that he “had come into close contact with someone from the campaign who tested positive for Covid-19,” according to a statement from his campaign.

“Both Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but according to his doctor’s recommendations and in accordance with CDC guidelines, they will be quarantined,” the statement said.

The campaign did not specify how long the senator intended to be quarantined. Donald Trump is expected to hold a rally in support of the Republican candidates in Georgia on Monday, the eve of the second election that will determine control of the Senate.

Perdue is challenged by Jon Ossoff as Senator Kelly Loeffler, who was named to her seat last December, takes on Raphael Warnock. Neither Perdue nor Loeffler made it to the 50% threshold needed to win their seats, leading to the run-offs on January 5.

If Perdue and Loeffler lose their races, the Senate Chamber would be evenly split between the parties, with Kamala Harris serving as the binding vote when she takes office as vice president. Polls show that matches are close and that candidates’ fates are likely tied together.

The twin election has caught a wave of national attention after Joe Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to hold the state since 1992. As a sign of that enthusiasm, more than 2.8 million voters in Georgia have already cast their votes – record participation for a second election.

Harris will visit Georgia on Sunday to campaign for the Democrats, while Biden will be holding an event on Monday.
