New Years Eve is counting down around the world

The Pacific islands of Tonga, Samoa and Kiribati were the first to be seen in the new year – when it was 5 a.m. on the east coast of the United States and 11 a.m. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, the global standard) on December 31. New Zealand was next, an hour later.

Just 163 miles from Samoa but in an entirely different time zone, American Samoa will have to wait a full day before it can see in 2021.
There are 39 different local times in use – including two that are more than 12 hours from UTC – meaning it will take 26 hours for the entire world to start the New Year.
So if you really, really really love to hum “Auld Lang Syne”, the list below will get you in the mood – time and time again.

This is when the world has been and will be ringing in the new year, relative to the east coast time.
