Dwayne Haskins: Washington Football Team releases quarterback after benching and violation of Covid-19 rules

“This afternoon I met Dwayne and told him we were going to release him,” Washington head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.

“I told him that I think both sides will benefit from going our separate ways. We would like to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him the best of luck.”

Haskins sat on the bench on Sunday during Washington’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.

His demotion followed a tumultuous week in which Haskins lost his role as one of Washington’s captains and was fined an undisclosed amount for violating the team’s Covid-19 protocols.

Washington relegated and fined Haskins after the team was made aware of social media posts showing the 23-year-old without a mask attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.

The NFL’s Covid-19 protocol prohibits players from being with more than 10 other people in indoor eateries or bars.

Haskins was the team’s first round in 2019 and 15th overall.

The former Ohio State University quarterback apologized to his team last week for his virus protocol actions, saying they were “immature and unacceptable.”

Haskins addressed Monday’s release on his private Twitter account, according to ESPN and multiple other outlets, saying he “took full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB and making this experience a better man. and player will be. “
