SAN ANTONIO – According to sheriff Javier Salazar, a deputy from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office who was charged with assaulting his husband earlier this year has been re-arrested on another charge.
31-year-old John Paul Garza has been charged with continued violence against a family member and violation of a protection order after the incident on Sunday night, Salazar said. Both charges are third-degree felonies with $ 10,000 bonds each, booking data shows.
At a news conference Monday morning, Salazar said that Garza had attacked the woman by hitting her on the floor and kicking her in the face, which “soiled” the woman’s clothing with blood.
Garza took off her clothes in an attempt to cover up evidence, Salazar said, and the woman, who was partially clothed, ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
“It’s honestly very disturbing,” he said.
Garza left the scene before the deputies arrived, the sheriff said. Authorities found Garza in a different location hours later, and booking records indicate he was arrested at 2am on Monday.
The patrol deputy, according to authorities, was off duty at the time of the attack and was already terminated due to an incident involving the same victim in February.
On Feb. 6, Garza was arrested on physical injury charges – married after allegedly assaulting his husband. When officers arrived the night before in North Bexar County, Garza had already fled, BCSO said.
He was later located and placed under arrest, and BCSO announced that he would be placed on administrative leave.
“This attack was much more violent the second time than the first,” Salazar said Monday.
Garza has not held a deputy position since February and is on unpaid administrative leave.
Salazar said Garza’s internal file included a violent interaction with a prisoner in 2013 who incited Garza and then lied to a polygraph.
He was hired by the office in July 2012.
