Houston Weather: Strong cold front causes widespread rain for NYE

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – On Tuesday in Southeast Texas another warm and pleasant day arrives. The high temperatures should rise in the mid-1970s. We may see a stray shower or two, but most of us will stay dry.

Our next weather system will make its way to Texas Wednesday and Thursday. This gives us a chance for widespread rain and also creates cooler temperatures.

When will the next storm reach Houston?

Our last storm system of 2020 arrives Wednesday with thunderstorms and a strong cold front Thursday morning.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Wednesday and Thursday there will be showers and thunderstorms with the greatest chance of widespread rain on Thursday. The current expectation is that most will receive 1-2 “rain with isolated spots turning 3-5”. Flooding in the streets will be possible.

Are we going through heavy weather?

Bad weather is possible, but the chance seems small at the moment. When we see a severe storm, the main threats are damaging wind gusts and large hail.

What is the weather forecast for New Years Eve in Houston?

New Years Eve brings us cold, windy and wet weather, but we do expect the rain to disappear before midnight. Temperatures are expected to drop all day after the cold front sets in. We should be looking at the temperatures in the 40s in the afternoon. At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day, temperatures will likely be in the upper 30 and 40 degrees with a wind chill factor close to freezing.

Wait, you said “freezing cold”. Will snow fall ?!

Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but there’s a chance that snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this point it appears likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact trail the storm system takes across the state, so we can’t rule it out entirely for Southeast Texas just yet.

So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is a very, very low probability that does not equal zero, but don’t hope for it yet.
