Pedro Pierluisi tends to be two candidates to lead Recreation and Sports

The Director of the Guaynabo Sports Office, Gil Urbina Pérez, and the Assistant Secretary for Administration of the Sports and Recreation Division (DRD), the attorney Rolando Cuevas, they sound like the strongest candidates to be appointed by elected governor Pedro Pierluisi to lead the DRD as it is due to be announced between tomorrow, Monday and next Wednesday.

Sources familiar with the interview process told El Nuevo Día that the pool of potential candidates has been reduced to these two officials.

In the case of Urbina Pérez, who has represented Puerto Rico in the sport of weightlifting and was an assistant secretary to the DRD, he has the favor of a host of federal presidents.

Meanwhile, Cuevas holds one of the highest positions in the DRD, representing the current secretary, Adriana Sánchez Parés, in several public hearings.

He was also appointed by Pierluisi in September as director of the “Get Out the Vote” initiative to encourage voting in the latest elections.

Similarly, Pierluisi met former athlete and now athletic director of the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, Ray Quiñones, last Friday to discuss this position, a source told this newspaper.

In addition to these three people, the Pierluisi team has considered for this position the leader of Double A Baseball, Efraín “Cano” García; the Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, María Elena “Mari” Batista; volleyball player and lawyer Debora Seilhamer; and outgoing Senator Miguel Laureano.

Likewise, the possibility that Pierluisi would leave Sánchez Parés at his post was mentioned, as he has done with other officials such as the General Adjutant of the National Guard, José Juan Reyes; the Minister of Finance, Francisco Parés; and the Secretary of Labor and Personnel, Carlos J. Rivera Santiago.

Likewise, the elected governor has made important appointments, such as that of Manuel Cidre to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, that of former Senator Larry Seilhamer to the Secretary of State, and that of Dr. Carlos Mellado as Health Minister.

Pierluisi will be sworn in as the new governor on January 2.
