DETROIT – The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 477,269 on Saturday, including 12,029 deaths, state officials report.

Saturday’s update includes 7,341 new cases and 254 additional deaths. On Wednesday, the state reported a total of 469,928 confirmed cases and 11,775 deaths.

Important note: Due to the holiday, the state of Michigan did not provide an update on the coronavirus data on Dec. 24-25. The Saturday, Dec. 26 update represents an average of 2,447 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Michigan every day between Dec. 23 and 26.

Of the 254 COVID-19 deaths reported Saturday, officials say 188 were identified during a review of records – meaning they didn’t occur between December 23 and 26.

On Saturday, the state reported a total of 318,389 cases of recovery from the virus.

The state of Michigan will stop providing updates on coronavirus data on Sunday. The next update is expected Monday afternoon.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 80 million people worldwide have been infected and more than 1.7 million died on Saturday. The actual numbers are certainly much higher, due to limited testing, different ways nations count the dead, and deliberate under-reporting by some governments.

Michigan restaurants are still struggling to dine indoors, which is banned by the state’s COVID-19 order, but Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hinted good news might come soon.

“I hope if people do what they did around Thanksgiving and don’t travel, and do the right thing and keep our gatherings limited to a family or two, maximum, and wear masks, we’ll be in a strong position right after the first of the years to take another step forward, ”Whitmer said.

The US added a second COVID-19 vaccine to its arsenal on Friday, December 19, stepping up efforts to combat an outbreak so dire that the nation regularly records more than 3,000 deaths a day.

The much-needed doses will arrive Monday after the Food and Drug Administration clears an emergency rollout of the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the state is reviewing its COVID-19 order to resume in-person high school classes, reopen certain indoor entertainment venues, and allow contactless outdoor sports and fitness classes.

The state is currently under a “pause” that imposed tougher COVID-19 regulations at restaurants, schools and more, but that order was due to expire on Sunday (the 20th of December).

Now the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has issued a revised version of the order, which will be effective until January 15.

A new tool created by Michigan Health Officers can calculate the likelihood of a person getting COVID-19 and how serious the infection could be based on their living situation and personal behavior.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched “CV19 CheckUp” – a free, anonymous tool that evaluates a person’s risks associated with COVID-19.

“This tool, which we will make available to all Michiganders, will help individuals understand their risk based on their life situation and personal behavior, and provides recommendations to reduce those risks while connecting people to services as needed,” said Dr. Alexis Travis, Senior Assistant Director of the Aging & Adult Services Agency.

Travis said the tool can be used by all Michigan residents, but it is specifically designed to help adults aged 60 and over. It is anonymous and does not require a name, email address or identification of any type.

The tool used artificial intelligence to analyze each person through an online questionnaire. It is designed for those who are considered high risk.

The tool’s algorithms are based on science and medicine, using data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation.
