Disney and Warnes Bros. Pictures have the most special gifts this Christmas: the streaming premieres of the films ‘Soul’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’.
Both films, originally scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of this year, will be released on digital platforms tomorrow to bring some fun to families at one of the main festivities.
“We made the film for a big screen, but I think it will continue to reach people,” said ‘Soul’ director Pete Docter, winner of two Oscars for ‘Up’ (2009) and ‘Inside Out’.
Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins, for her part, confesses to The Associated Press that she’s excited that the public will finally see the film. He also notes that he hopes to bring some joy to the end of a challenging and devastating year.
“To be honest, the idea that I made a movie that you would see at Christmas makes me cry (…) I just think it’s really special,” he says.
Wonder Woman 1984, which is a sequel to DC Comics’ Wonder Woman (2017), features on HBO Max the warrior played by Gal Gadot in the Regan era, the baggy pants and Duran Duran.
The film features two villains: insecure scientist Barbara Minerva turned rival Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig, and ambitious businessman Maxwell Lord, played by Chilean-born actor Pedro Pascal. Both have put Diana to the test, who has also changed over time.
“We found a very different Diana from the wide-eyed Diana we met in the first,” said Gal Gadot. “She is very lonely.”
However, his character gets a flash of happiness when Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) reappears in his life almost 70 years after his death.
A film with its own soul
Soul, which will come straight to Disney +, revolves around Joe, a not particularly successful jazz player exhausted from teaching music lessons to unmotivated students who, after an unfortunate accident, end up in the Great Origin, a place where every Soul acquires its unique qualities to form a personality before moving to Earth.
There, Joe’s soul will try to “rise” to return to New York, although along the way he will meet other extravagant, fearful, competitive souls and even a cynical adversary who despises human and earthly life.
This new film from Pixar studios will delve into the why of our personality in a similar way to that in which ‘Inside Out’ (2015) explored our emotions.
