Kirk Cameron is facing backlash for holding massive rallies amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Growing pains The star gathered hundreds of people on Sunday evening to sing Christmas carols outside The Oaks shopping center in Thousand Oaks, California. Many attendees didn’t wear masks or exercise social distance, according to Instagram videos posted by Cameron, while COVID-19 cases are on the rise in South America. California and intensive care unit capacity are dangerously low.
“God bless America!” Cameron has endorsed a video. “Joy over fear.”
Cameron is an evangelistic Christian who is active in a ministry in the Los Angeles area. He has partnered with the Sing It Louder USA group and is leading peaceful protests against California Governor Gavin Newsom’s house arrest. Sunday’s caroling event was the second Cameron hosted this month. On the first on December 6, “over 500 people” sang in protest.
“We want to double the size of our local gathering and sing Christmas carols, Christmas carols with a louder voice,” Cameron told his followers last week, urging people to attend Sunday’s protest. “It’s such an uplifting, inspiring and encouraging time. We want you to join us. “
Judging by Cameron’s videos, they had a big turnout.
Cameron was called “disrespectful” and “selfish” in his comments section, with thousands of people expressing their disappointment.
“As a fellow member of your community, this is a slap in the face to all those nurses who are now chasing our hospital for being exhausted,” wrote one woman.
“So love for your neighbors means you love them so much that you’re going to give them covid?” added another Instagram user.
According to KABC-TV, Cameron and other carolers said they wanted to celebrate their God-given freedoms. But the mayor of Thousand Oaks doesn’t see it that way.
“Freedom and liberty are very fragile and they come with a great responsibility,” said Claudia Bill-de la Pena. “Continuing to hold large gatherings and ignore all guidelines is unchristian in my opinion.”
Thousand Oaks is the second largest city in Ventura County. It was announced on Tuesday that ICU capacity has fallen to 1 percent in Ventura County, while nearby Los Angeles County, with 10 million people, had fewer than 100 beds available.
