Queen Elizabeth II is formally addressed by almost everyone in the world. The same goes for Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. But at 5 and 3 years old, Prince George and Princess Charlotte don’t use such big titles when they run into trouble at family parties.
So what do they (and Prince Louis, once he starts talking!) Call the queen and potential future queen behind closed doors? Apparently both royals shun the traditional ‘grandma’ and ‘grandma’.
“My own grandchildren call me GaGa,” Camilla said Daily mail, shortly after the birth of Prince George. “I don’t know if it’s because they think I am! It’s funny but it’s still very sweet.”
Before the smallest Cambridges arrived, Camilla already had five grandchildren herself through her first marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles. Her son Tom Parker Bowles has two children, while his sister Laura Lopes has three. Laura’s daughter Eliza even served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!
While it’s unclear whether George and Charlotte took the same nickname, Prince William let a little information slip. In last year’s ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, the Duke of Cambridge stated that he regularly reminds his children of “two grandmothers in their lives”: Carole Middleton and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. It makes sense that they use a different fame to describe Prince Charles’s second wife.
Whatever name they chose, the new biography The Duchess: Camilla Parker Bowles and the Love Affair That Rocked the Crown paints a picture of a totally loving matriarch. Every June, Camilla throws a big party for both her grandchildren and friends’ grandchildren, and it sounds like a toddler’s dream come true.
“In 2016, there were about 90 children eating sandwiches, cakes and jellies and roaring through the garden of Clarence House, tug of war and enchanted as magicians performed tricks and entertainers made them laugh,” wrote Penny Junor.
As for the Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge tossed the beans on Prince George’s informal name for the sovereign in another ITV documentary, Our queen at ninety. “He calls her ‘Gan-Gan,'” Kate said, adding that the Queen is very fond of her youngest offspring. “She always leaves a small gift or something in their room when we go and stay, and that just shows her love for the family.”
How sweet is that ?! Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will love visiting Gan-Gan’s home, or as the rest of us know, Buckingham Palace.
