A follow-up series to “Night Court” is in development at NBC, Variety has confirmed.
In the sequel to the classic sitcom, original series star John Larroquette returns as Dan Fielding. Big Bang Theory alum Melissa Rauch has been added as an executive producer to the series.
The new multi-cam show would follow unashamedly optimistic Judge Abby Stone, daughter of original series character Harry Stone, as she follows in her father’s footsteps as she leads the night shift of a Manhattan court. She tries to bring order to the crew of eccentrics and cynics, most notably former night officer Fielding (Larroquette). Harry Stone was played by Harry Anderson in the original series. Anderson died in 2018.
Dan Rubin is linked to write and produce the project. Rauch and her husband Winston Rauch will executive produce under the banner of After January Productions. Larroquette produces in addition to the lead role. Warner Bros. Television is the studio.
“Night Court” was created by Reinhold Weege. It ran on NBC from 1984-1992 for nine seasons and nearly 200 episodes. The series won seven Emmys throughout the series, including four for Larroquette in the best supporting actor in a comedy category.
This is one of many sequels, reboots, and revivals currently in the works at NBC. It was previously announced that the network was developing a serial version of the movie “Finding Forrester”, while Variety reported exclusively in October that a series based on “Fried Green Tomatoes” starring Reba McEntire is also in development. Most recent, Variety reported exclusively that the network’s pilot based on the movie “Night School” did not progress.
Deadline first reported the news of “Night Court”.
