90 of 95 tests in a Michigan prison for the highly contagious British COVID variant were positive

Ionia, Michigan – Officials in Michigan said Tuesday that at least 90 cases of the highly contagious COVID-19 variant first identified in the UK have been confirmed in a prison here. The Department of Health and Human Services said only five of the 95 tests performed did not yield positive results.

In addition, the results of an additional 100 tests from the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility were still pending as of Tuesday night.

All but two of the 90 people tested positive were prisoners. The other two were servants, officials said.

Testing was started in prison after it was found that an employee had the variant.

But the officials pointed out that the number of positive COVIDA results started to decline once the daily tests began.

Additional precautions against COVID were taken at the facility as soon as the variant was found there, officials added. Daily testing was one of the new steps.
