7 hurt after NYC tandem bus goes off-road and leaves front half dangling from overpass – NBC New York

At least seven people were injured after a New York accordion-style bus swerved off the road and dangled half of it from an overpass.

A police spokesperson said the BX-35 bus driver “was unable to navigate the road and went off the road” near the Cross Bronx Expressway and University Avenue around 11pm Thursday. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and no arrests have been made.

Six of the injured were bus passengers and the other was the driver, and they were taken to hospital with minor injuries, police and MTA spokesman Tim Minton said.

The FDNY later said that a total of nine people had been injured. It is unclear whether the other two are also passengers.

Minton said it is too early to speculate the cause of the incident. He told the bus driver to turn left onto the highway, but for whatever reason, the bus missed the exit.

Videos from the Citizen App show a huge police response to the scene and many people gathering to take pictures and videos.

Delays are expected in the area until a crane arrives to collect the bus from the bridge.
