52-year-old New Jersey man is hospitalized with COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated
- Francisco Cosme received the one-time Johnson & Johnson vaccine
- He received his vaccine on March 6 at the Javits Center in New York City
- Humans are considered protected two weeks after vaccination
- On April 1, he started showing symptoms of COVID-19 and was confirmed positive
- Last week his condition deteriorated and he was taken to the JFK Medical Center
- J & J’s vaccine is 72% effective in the US, meaning 28 in 100 still get infected
A New Jersey man fights for his life in hospital with COVID-19 despite being vaccinated against the virus.
Francisco Cosme, 52, was vaccinated with the one-time Johnson & Johnson vaccine on March 6 – he traveled from his home in Edison, New Jersey to Manhattan for the shot.
The vaccine is considered effective after two weeks, and Cosme continued to follow the CDC’s advice on social aloofness and face masks.
Still, his daughter, Michelle Torres, 31, told The New York Post that he fell ill on April 1.

“He had a cough, fever, chills, everything,” she told the newspaper.
Torres took her father to a clinic where he tested positive for COVID-19 and was ordered to remain in quarantine for ten days.
His condition continued to worsen, and last week she noticed her father was having trouble breathing and called 911.
Cosme received oxygen and was taken by ambulance to John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Union City, New Jersey.
Torres said her father was in critical condition and was being treated for pneumonia.
“I’m trying to keep it together, you don’t know what’s going on every day,” she told the newspaper.
“The doctor said they’ve done everything they can and it’s up to him to fight and to God.”
Torres told the Post that her mother, husband, and children have all also been tested positive for the virus.
‘We survived without it all year round [the vaccine] – do all the things we’re supposed to do: social distance, wash hands and mask, ”she said.
“It’s crazy and we need answers.”
She did not indicate whether he had pre-existing conditions.
The Javits Center is one of the largest of the mass vaccination centers in the New York area
None of the COVID vaccines currently being administered are 100 percent effective.
On April 4, Ashley Allen, 31, tested positive for COVID, despite receiving her one-time Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Javits Center on March 10.
However, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is believed to be 100 percent effective in preventing severe cases of COVID, such as Cosme’s.
“The vaccine had high efficacy in preventing hospitalization and death in people who did get sick,” the CDC currently states on their website.
“No one who received COVID-19 at least 4 weeks after receiving the J & J / Janssen vaccine had to be hospitalized.”
