Private quarterbacks coach John Beck has worked this off-season with both Ohio State’s Justin Fields and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, helping each aspiring candidate prepare for their pro-day training for NFL teams. Both will hear their names called out next week, and their NFL tours will officially begin.
Fields and Lance, along with Alabama’s Mac Jones, are among the top contenders to be drafted at No. 3 by the San Francisco 49ers. The team traded to the spot on March 26 in search of a quarterback of the future.
Beck, who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washinton, remains close to the 49ers’ head coach. San Francisco recommended that Lance work with the private coach ahead of his second pro day and even gave Beck a list of things they wanted to see from the former Bison quarterback. Clearly, Beck’s input can have a significant impact on the Niners’ evaluation process.
Beck agreed The football GM podcast this week (h / t tot Patrick Tulini), who spoke to Mike Sando and Randy Mueller, and shared what turns him on about the quarterbacks he has worked with.
“When Justin Fields walks onto the field, he acts in a way you know he played for Ohio State University,” said Beck. “You know he’s been the guy there for two years. You know he’s played in a national championship. You know he watches Super Bowls. You can tell by his focus that when he steps onto the field, he goes every day. to prove he was the best in the field.
“I’m just saying it for what it was. Not a day went by where he didn’t try to be the best in the field, and that excites me because that’s the kind of attitude you have.”
Then you have Lance, who has only 17 collegiate starts on his resume. That may not be a lot of experience, but Beck can imagine an NFL team being very happy with the prospect.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Trey for the past few weeks. It’s been great,” said Beck. ‘He showed me so much [are] will show me and prove that someone will really be happy with who they get. He’s very athletic, very smart. You put him on the board, you watch tape with him, you can see that the football he played in North Dakota will prepare him well for the plan he will have in the NFL. “
Maybe Beck already has a specific plan in mind. Maybe that scheme is being used by a particular Bay Area team.
Beck hasn’t worked with Jones, but that doesn’t mean he lacks an opinion on the former Crimson Tide quarterback.
“I really enjoyed watching Mac Jones on tape this year,” he said. “I think he’s super talented. … I’ve watched his game in Florida. I’ve watched his national championship game. I’ve watched them all a number of times and I’m so impressed with him as a player.”
