383 more COVID-19 cases, 15 deaths, nearly 24K vaccinations reported Tuesday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – According to the Utah Department of Health, COVID-19 cases in Utah rose by 383 on Tuesday, with 15 more deaths and 23,950 vaccinations.

Twelve of the deaths occurred before March 1, but were still under investigation by state medical inspectors, the health department said.

Health officials now estimate that there are 10,536 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The moving seven-day average number of positive cases per day now stands at 443, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that period reported with the “people over people” method is now 7.8%. The positive test rate per day over seven days calculated with the “test over test” method is now 4%.

There are currently 131 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah, including 49 in intensive care units, state data shows. About 64% of the beds in the Utah intensive care unit are now occupied, including about 66% of the intensive care beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 47% of non-IC hospital beds are now occupied, state data shows.

A total of 1,178,728 vaccine doses have been administered in the state, up from 1,154,778 on Monday. A total of 780,081 Utahns have now received at least one dose of vaccine, and 429,306 have been fully vaccinated, health department data shows. To date, a total of 1,323,050 vaccine doses have been shipped to Utah.

The new numbers indicate an increase of 0.1% in positive cases since Monday. Of the 2,340,071 people tested for COVID-19 so far in Utah, 16.3% have tested positive for the disease. The total number of tests conducted since the start of the pandemic now stands at 4,124,865, up from 15,624 since Monday. Of those, 6,022 were tests from people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19, the health department said.

The 15 deaths reported on Tuesday were:

  • A man from Cache County who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was hospitalized when he died
  • A Davis County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and lived in a long-term care facility
  • Two Davis County men over the age of 85 who were residents of long-term care facilities
  • A Garfield County man over the age of 85 living in a long-term care facility
  • Two women in Salt Lake County who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and lived in long-term care facilities
  • A Salt Lake County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was not hospitalized when he died
  • Two women in Salt Lake County who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were not hospitalized when they died
  • A woman in Utah County who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and lived in a long-term care facility
  • A Utah County woman over the age of 85 living in a long-term care facility
  • A Utah County man over the age of 85 who was not hospitalized when he died
  • A Utah County man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was not hospitalized when he died
  • A woman from Weber County who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and lived in a long-term care facility

Tuesday’s totals give Utah a total of 382,171 confirmed cases, with 15,323 total hospitalizations and 2,077 total deaths from the disease. According to the health department, a total of 369,558 Utah COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered.

The Utah Government Spencer Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson are scheduled to provide a COVID-19 pandemic update at a press conference Thursday at 11am.
