344 more COVID-19 cases, 14.3K new vaccinations reported Sunday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – There were 344 new COVID-19 cases in Utah with no new deaths, according to an update from the Utah Department of Health Sunday.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now about 400 cases per day, according to the health department. According to updated data, that’s a drop of six from Saturday.

Utah’s rate has been above 400 new cases per day since September 9, 2020. It even reached 3,392 new cases per day in November and 3,258 per day in early January.

Meanwhile, the positive test rate per day for that period reported with the “people over people” method is now 7%. The positive test rate per day over seven days, calculated by the “test over test” method, is 3.4%.

The health department reported on Sunday that 14,350 more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. In total, nearly 1.5 million vaccines have been administered in the state.

Nearly 975,000 Utahns have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the state is expected to exceed 1 million this week. The state reports that 564,824 Utahns are “fully vaccinated,” meaning they have either received both doses of a two-dose vaccine or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is a single-dose vaccine.

The health department also reported on Sunday that 129 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized in Utah because of COVID-19. That’s five fewer than what was reported on Saturday. Forty-five of those hospitalized patients were in intensive care.

Sunday’s totals give Utah a total of 387,341 confirmed cases, with 15,608 total hospitalizations and 2,132 total deaths from the disease as of March 2020. The new numbers indicate an increase of less than 1% in positive cases since Saturday.

Of the more than 2.4 million people who have been tested for COVID-19 to date in Utah, 1.6% have tested positive for COVID-19.
