3 killed, 3 others injured in shooting at the Illinois bowling alley

Three people were killed Saturday night and three were injured when someone opened fire at a bowling alley in Rockford, Illinois, CBS Chicago reports. According to the police, one suspect has been taken into custody.

According to the Rockford Police Department, the suspect is a 37-year-old white male and “no others are currently being sought”.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said at a press conference Saturday night that police were called to Don Carter Lanes bowling alley at 6:55 p.m. local time. O’Shea said three people were dead, while three others were shot and injured and treated in local hospitals.

At least two of the people shot are teenagers, according to CBS partner WIFR-TV. It is currently unknown whether they were patrons or employees of the bowling alley.

Police believe the shooting was a random attack.

The suspect was still in the building when the police arrived, O’Shea said. Officers were not believed to be firing shots and as of 8:30 p.m. it was assumed that the person taken into custody was the only person involved.

The ages and identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

O’Shea said some of the victims were shot in the bowling alley and some outside.

Police were unsure whether the bowling alley was open for business at the time of the shooting. The bowling alley should have been closed due to the state’s COVID-19 restrictions.
