The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved a man wanted in an armed carjacking in Orange County. The man, whose name and age have not been released, died in a head-on crash with an SUV, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the SUV, a 21-year-old Wisconsin man, and his 18-year-old sister, a front passenger, were also killed in the crash, the FHP said. According to a report by the FHP, a 17-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, who also drove the SUV, were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. All four were wearing their seat belts, the FHP said.
The volusia county sheriff’s investigators said the suspected car thief drove away from Flagler County deputies before the crash, turned off his lights and entered Volusia County.
Officials said when the man entered Volusia County, deputies from the sheriff’s office took chase. The sheriff’s office said the man was making a U-turn on Interstate 95 and that deputies ended the chase and tried to stop oncoming traffic heading south.
Deputies said the man then drove north in the south lanes and the SUV hit near exit 260A.
Both drivers and the 18-year-old woman were pronounced dead on the spot, the FHP said.
One of the surviving victims was airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the other was transported to Halifax Health.
Details about the armed carjacking, including when it took place, have not been released.
