SALT LAKE CITY – About one-third of Utah’s vaccine-eligible population is now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while just over half of Utahns eligible have now received at least one dose of the vaccine, reported the Utah Department of Health Monday.
The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 200 on Monday, with two more deaths and 1,326 vaccinations, according to the health department.
A total of 1,898,857 vaccine doses were administered in the state, up from 1,897,531 on Sunday. In total, 1,191,770 Utahns, or about 37.2% of the state population, have now received at least one dose of vaccine, while 791,734, about 24.7% of the total state population, have been fully vaccinated. According to the health department, about 50.1% of all Utahns ages 16 and older have now received at least one dose of vaccine. About 33.3% of Utahns ages 16 and older are now fully vaccinated, the health department reported.
According to data from the health department, a total of 2,168,470 vaccine doses have been shipped to the state so far.
The health department estimates there are 8,538 active COVID-19 cases in Utah as of Monday. The moving seven-day average number of positive cases per day now stands at 382, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that period, calculated with the “people over people” method, is now 6.9%. The positive test rate per day for that period, calculated with the “test over test” method, is now 3.5%.
There are currently 138 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah, including 54 in intensive care units, state data show. About 66% of all beds in the Utah intensive care unit are now occupied, including about 69% of the intensive care beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. According to state data, about 51% of non-ICU hospital beds in Utah have been occupied as of Monday.
The new numbers indicate an increase of 0.05% in positive cases since Sunday. Of the 2,493,089 people tested for COVID-19 so far in Utah, 15.8% tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests conducted in Utah since the start of the pandemic is now 4,480,612, up from 5,021 since Sunday. Of those, 2,695 were tests from people who had not previously been tested for the disease.
The two deaths reported Monday were both from Weber County. One was a man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was hospitalized when he died, and the second was a woman who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and lived in a long-term care facility.
Monday’s totals give Utah 392,957 total confirmed cases, with 15,922 total hospitalizations and 2,166 total deaths from the disease. According to the health department, an estimated 382,253 Utah COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered.
Utah’s pandemic “endgame” law, formally known as HB294, requires all state and local health ordinances related to COVID-19 to end the day Utah hits the threshold in three key metrics: The 14-Day Case of the state is less than 191 per 100,000 people, the seven-day average of COVID-19 intensive care unit use is less than 15%, and 1,633,000 prime doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been assigned to Utah.
As of Monday, Utah is meeting the HB294 thresholds for the first two stats. The state’s COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 people is now 170.2 and COVID-19 ICU use in the past seven days is now 11.9%.
Only 1,335,645 prime doses have been assigned to Utah as of Monday, according to the health department. The first doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccination cycles, as well as the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson product, are considered prime doses. According to health officials, the state is expected to hit the benchmark of 1,633,000 prime doses by the second or third week of May.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson are scheduled to provide a COVID-19 pandemic update at their weekly press conference Thursday at 11 a.m., according to the governor’s office.
