15 active COVID-19 outbreaks reported in senior homes

A total of 15 COVID-19 outbreaks are currently active in various long-term care facilities or homes for the elderly in Puerto Rico, in addition to the 75 outbreaks reported in these places so far.

This is reported by Juanita Aponte Morales, president of the Association of Owners of Centers for Long-term Care, in an interview with Radio Isla.

“We currently have 75 outbreaks and more than 170 older adults who have died in institutions,” said Aponte Morales, adding that these centers had kept the virus under control, but as more people in the community became infected, the cases started. to reach houses.

“It was time we started doing that, because maybe younger populations infected with the virus are contagious and can overcome it. The older adults we help are people with impaired immune systems, so we can lose them very easily,” explained .

On the other hand, Aponte Morales claimed that some of these outbreaks have occurred in large institutions with 100 or more people, which may be a symbol of higher risk as it is difficult to separate the sick population from which it has not been. infected.
