1 in 5 trust that Biden can unite the country: poll

Americans are by no means united this ask.

Only one in five Americans is “very confident” in President Biden’s ability to fulfill his goal of unifying the country, according to a new poll released Sunday.

While 22 percent said Biden will unite the country, 24 percent remained highly skeptical, saying they have “no confidence at all” that he will be able to do so, the ABC News / Ipsos poll found.

Thirty-five percent said they had a “good amount” of confidence that Biden could unite the country and 19 percent said they had “not that much” confidence.

Survey respondents were asked their views after watching a video of Biden’s inaugural speech urging Americans to “see each other as neighbors, not adversaries.”

“We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the screaming and lower the temperature. Because without unity there is no peace – only bitterness and anger. No progress – just exhausting outrage. Not a nation – just a state of chaos, ”Biden said.

At the same time, 71 percent of those who viewed Biden’s inaugural speech, in whole or in part, said his message was “very” or “somewhat” convincing.

Another 29 percent who looked at it thought it was “not that convincing” or “not at all convincing.”

The poll took a random sample of 504 adults across the country between Jan. 22-23.

It has a margin of error of plus / minus 5.0 percentage points.
